Practical technique to overcome the “fear of being a fool”

by Daniel Batten on February 25, 2010

There is a simple way to identify and root out drag on a business in next-to-no-time. It does require that you do something different.

Start by asking this provocative question of yourself.

– Are you risking rejection every single day?

Every day, there is a conversation with your customers that you are either having or not having- or

there is a conversation with your prospects that you are either having or not having – or

there is a conversation with your staff that you are either having or not having – or

there is a conversation with your peers all co-founders that you are either having or not having

Do these conversations advance your business?

To put it another way, by not having any one of these conversations are you not holding back your business?

So is one of the most important things you can do in business to overcome fear of rejection and to be confident you can land any communication?

Holding back your business is a pretty serious consequence.

A Doctor can treat a patient irrespective of whether that patient is an engineer, an artist, an Australian or an African. In the same way, it is not necessary that a business mentor knows your industry in order to know whether your company is healthy.

So why would you tolerate behaviour that is holding back your business? The answer is usually because you are not (yet) confident in you ability to ‘land’ your communication in such a way that they won’t fail. This is a condition that can be treated.

Start by asking yourself each day the provocative question above. Dare to risk rejection every day. And if that feels too hard by yourself but you still want the result, then it is time to get yourself a business coach or a business mentor.
