Leave the door open for magic when goal-setting

by Daniel Batten on June 10, 2010

I’m sure by now most of you will have seen me in this – either on the Television or Youtube.

You may be one of the people who has already asked “how did that happen?

It’s a good question, because in the answer lies a secret about how great results happen by being  “unattached to outcome”. (something I’ve only recently got the hang of doing on a consistent basis). So I decided to share that story.

I recently took one month out from my business to be part of a team of volunteers for Art of Living who to organized a 4000-person strong meditation lead by “one of the world’s 3 wise men” Sri Sri Ravishankar at Trusts Stadium. From a business point-of-view, this made no sense. I was replacing one month of earning capability with one month of volunteer activity.

However, I also have a fundamental belief that when you focus on being of service to the greater good, you are supported beyond your imagination.

So I gave my 100% to helping to volunteer work, trusting that financial matters would be taken care of.

Within 2 weeks of the event, I had a phonecall from my agent. Now I tell people I am an author, business mentor and speaker. I haven’t had any acting work since 2006 and its something I thought I’d closed the
chapter on, and something that has not been my focus. In fact, because it wasn’t my focus, I’d recently told my agent I did not want to do more auditions,

When she phoned up with news about a new audition for an Instant Kiwi ad, I said “thanks, but no thanks”.

… then 20 mins later she rang back again, said that the casting director said “what if we use the audition tape for last time Daniel auditioned for an Instant Kiwi ad?”

I said “why not” – there was nothing to lose, and none of my time required.

The next day my agent rang up and said “you’ve got the job!”

I couldn’t believe it.

I didn’t even audition!

and they never give people an ad without auditioning

… and it was the most fun I’ve ever had acting. Everyone in the cast, and Hamish the director were amazing to work with. And of course it took care of the one month of lost income and then some.

Afterwards I thought “I wonder what would have happened if I had auditioned?” Chances are it may not have had whatever magic ingredient was in the first audition tape.

So there you have it – faith works. Being unattached works. Being committed to doing things you love and trusting that the result will come works too.

But should that really come as any surprise?

Results happen naturally in beautiful and unexpected ways that are better than we can possibly imagine with our limited minds the moment we start letting go and trusting that there is something better in store for us. By all means set goals for yourself, but do it with a light touch, and with a willingness to be happy now whether the goal is realized or not. Sometimes you are given in ways that are different to what you expect, so stay flexible in your goal-setting and stay open to miracles.

The more trust you have, the more you leave the door open for the unexpected. And the more you give, the more comes back to you.
