“What is the one skill you don’t have, that you wish you did?”

by Daniel Batten on June 10, 2010

I recently was curious to know the answer to this question. So I conducted a survey.

The results were that

– 12% said something to do with Web2.0/social media/Internet Marketing

– 22% said something to do with better financial literacy, or basic accounting skills

– 38% said something to do with speaking, influencing, persuasion, or feeling comfortable addressing either a group, or an environment where they needed to persuade something of something.

– 18% – everything else

– 10% – “I already have all the skills I need”

I was amazed.

It confirms what I’d suspected for a long time:

That schools leave a huge gap when it comes to the skills we need in the real world, which rely less on our ability to write the right answer to a specific pre-defined question, and more on our ability to feel comfortable, be ourselves, and say what we need to say in the moment, when no-one is there to provide guidance about what the question is, let alone the “answer”.

So why was I surprised?

I was surprised that so many people already knew they lacked skills in speaking and influencing, and already knew that it was this skill more than any other that could really help them be more effective – not only in career or business, but in something as down-to-earth as influencing your teenage child to do tidy their room, and stay off drugs.

Influence is not about manipulation, its about creating a win-win for the influencee and influencer so that the level of consciousness and joy on the planet is increased. I became fascinated in this when I saw how authentic influence could save someones life. Mine!

Urgent Remedial Training Needed !

I believe there is an urgent need for remedial training in speaking and influencing skills. When you do this better, you entertain more, engage more, create more “aha” moments for people, and have more people feeling inspired by your presence. And you get to feel more confident and useful as a result. When this happens, results beyond your imagination simply come. There are too many people who are interesting, but talk in a boring way. I believe life will be more rich and more fun when people know how to relate and engage influentially with each-other.

How to become CEO of the world’s largest Tech Company

It is no coincidence that Apple has just become the largest technology company on the planet. And Apple’s CEO has spent 1000s of hours dedicated to learning how to speak, present and influence. It didn’t come naturally – it came through training and practice. As a result, he attracts people to his company that think like him, and go the extra mile; he creates evangelists for Apple’s products; and he gets to do what he loves most every single day.

If you have come to the conclusion that being more influential would help you to do more of what you love, I encourage you to do something about it, and take active steps to become better at influencing.

PS: While I’ll be dedicating a chapter to this in my upcoming book “How to Build a Million Dollar Business”, the nuts & bolts of authentic influence are all contained in “The 6 Secrets of Authentic Influence“. Go get a copy – it’ll change the results you get when you open your mouth – permanently.

But wait until after 21st June if you can wait – as there’ll be a special deal where you can get both e-books together – which I’m only offering to my mail list.

People would say that about speaking because they fear getting up in front of a group of people and talk about things, must say I learned so much when I did my Dale Carnegie course, that you simply have to speak from the heart.

My one skill: Perhaps to have a better writing talent, to write so compellingly that people would keep coming back, or perhaps find it easier to make friends, or maybe to be able to paint beautiful paintings or perhaps to be more comfortable to take risks and move from being a dreamer to making it happen.
